| Umar was a 10-year-old boy who loved to play video games, surf the internet and watch television. He was always busy wasting his time in these activities and by the time he sat down to studying, he'd be too tired or just plain distracted. This meant he would get awful marks in his tests. He used to think, "Why should I study? I can do it when I'm older. Plus, studying is so hard; I don't think I'd get good marks even if I tried." So Umar went through the years, barely passing his exams and not gaining any recognition as he got older. Finally, when he was 14, his parents put their foot down and arranged a tutor for him. Umar did not think it would help him, since all his teachers in his school didn't bother with him anymore. It had made him think that he couldn't do anything even he if wanted to. When Umar met his tutor, Ms Saira, on the first day, he was pleasantly surprised at her optimistic attitude and leniency. Here was a teacher who was all smiles and did not scold him if he did not know something. His tuition classes became more of a delight than something he detested because he could ask any question without feeling silly and she would help him through it. Umar soon learnt that he could do a lot if he put his mind to it and focused. He began to get excellent grades and his parents were very proud of him. Finally, it was the result day and when Umar found out that he had gotten the highest grades in his class, he was proud of himself and grateful to Ms Saira. He did not hesitate to give her the credit for his improved performance and remained her loyal student and follower for many years even after leaving school. |
