Missing addict a headache for police

RAWALPINDI, March 31: A 26-year-old addict given into police custody by his family early this week, to keep him away from drugs and crime, has disappeared causing headache to the police.

His sister, Mumtaz Tabassum, has been pestering senior police officers for his "release" or trial if wanted on any charge but the R.A. Bazaar police say Sikandar Iqbal was left with them by Ms Tabassum and an uncle and that there exist no complaint of theft or any other crime against him in their records.

"He was just an addict, not involved in any other crime. Please release him or send him to jail if he is involved in any other crime but don`t torture or kill him as his father has already died and there is no one to look after him," his sister said sobbing.

She alleged that she was threatened of dire consequences by the policemen when she went to the police station.

She said she even approached police high-ups seeking their help in tracing her missing brother whose fate was not known even after five days.

A police sub-inspector, when contacted, said: "I didn`t handcuff him when he was kept in the police station and I wanted to release him the following morning. But, unfortunately, he went missing from the police station."
