KP rebuilding efforts hailed

PESHAWAR, March 31: Members of the judicial commission constituted by the Supreme Court on floods visited Peshawar on Thursday to get firsthand information about the government response towards 2010 flood.

The commission, set up under constitutional petition No.62/2010 titled Marvi Memon vs Federation of Pakistan held a meeting with the officers of different line agencies at the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) here on Thursday, said a press release.

The commission comprised of former chief secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Azam Khan, former federal secretaries Khwaja Zaheer Ahmed and A.W. Kazi and former chief secretary of Balochistan Fateh Khan Khajak.

The flood commission, comprising members representing all the provinces, after conducting field visits of the flood-affected areas, had already submitted an interim report to the Supreme Court on March 25, 2011.

Officers from PDMA, irrigation department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and army gave presentations to the commission about the achieved targets along with the ongoing work in the rehabilitation, restoration and construction, carried out on the onset of floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The PDMA as well as the provincial rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts were applauded by the commission members.

The commission had been tasked with assessing the damages as well as finding the reasons due to which the dykes were breached during the floods and also prepare suggestions about compensation to the people who suffered due to the diversion of floodwaters. The commission decided to initiate field visits of flood affected areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to get a sense about the work so far accomplished in the reconstruction and rehabilitation.
