FRANKFURT: The pitches at some of Germany’s top stadiums are so bad that the football league has set up an expert commission to examine the quality of the grass.

Germany boasts up-to-date stadiums after the 2006 World Cup but the playing surface is poor at many arenas, especially after the long winter.

The German football league (DFL) says the commission will propose steps to improve the pitches.

The DFL said on Monday the step was necessary because the quality of grass at some games in recent weeks "has been unsatisfactory."

The DFL runs the Bundesliga and said its duty was to secure top playing conditions.
