RAWALPINDI, March 30: An international humanitarian agency has resolved the lingering water scarcity issue at the Adiala Jail by installing two turbines and establishing water tanks on the premises. The International Committee of Red Cross had been conducting survey on the premises of the jail for the last three months to explore the underground source of water and finally succeeded in reaching the water-table at the depth of 400 feet. The two turbines costing Rs6 million will draw water for the over 5,000 inmates and 2,000 staff of the prison. It may be noted that the jail had been facing shortage of water since its construction in 1986. According to the jail officials, the water was not only inadequate but also not fit for human consumption. Jail superintendent Mohsin Rafique said: "We are quite happy to get enough quantity of water. We had been relying on water that was provided to jail for the last 26 years. The inmates are also happy as they were facing big The agency has laid pipelines and constructed water tanks and the turbines automatically turn on and off after filling the tanks. |
