LAHORE, April 30: Some 1,500 rabies cases, 95 per cent of which were caused by dog bite, were reported at the Institute of Public Health in 2010. "Rabies is a killer disease but can be prevented through proper vaccination," University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) acting vice-chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad said at a ceremony in connection with World Veterinary Day on the UVAS campus on Saturday. Earlier, UVAS faculty and students held an on-campus walk to raise awareness about the disease. Veterinarians examined animals and pets while giving free medicines for different ailments at the UVAS outdoor wing and the pets centre. Meanwhile, Association for the Development of International Exchange in Agriculture and Agri-food Products and Techniques has offered extending collaboration with various business organisations and education institutions in Australia to create linkage and enhance cooperation with UVAS. This was stated by Bertrand Queveremont, leader of an Australian parliamentary delegation, during a meeting with UVAS acting vice-chancellor on Saturday. Mr Bertrand said that the UVAS could enhance its potential in livestock sector by benefiting from Australian experiences. |
