Super Sis

Dear Super Sis,

My feet stink during winters especially when I come back home from school and take off my shoes and socks. The smell is unbearable and it's very embarrassing sometimes. Please suggest what I  should do to get rid of this problem?

Worried

Foot odour is a common problem, particularly among young people so you are not alone. Fortunately, there are certain measures you can take to keep foot odour at bay. Make sure your feet are clean before putting on shoes; thoroughly wash and dry your feet. It is also a good idea to apply anti-bacterial talcum powder between your toes before slipping on socks.

When you buy socks, make sure they are made of cotton or of a cotton-blend material as it absorbs excess moisture and allows your skin to breathe. It would also help if you carry an extra pair of clean socks with you to school; powder and change your socks at half-time to keep the freshness levels up.

Once you get home, remove your shoes and air them out in a well-ventilated area. You could also dust the insides of your shoes with talcum powder for added odour reduction. Thoroughly wash, dry, moisturise and powder your feet and slip on a pair of open sandals/slippers to keep your skin breathing. Avoid wearing closed footwear after school if you can help it and keep your feet clean.

At home, keep several pairs of clean cotton socks for school and never wear unwashed socks. Once you start following these tips, you will find a significant reduction in foot odour levels and over time, you will learn to keep foot odour at bay forever. Good luck!
